Reminder: Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 14th

As a friendly reminder, the United States and Canada change to Daylight Saving Time on the second Sunday of March.

That means on Sunday, March 14th, clocks need to be shifted ahead one hour at 2:00AM. (Spring forward)

Teuta Meeting - March 14th

The next meeting of the Teuta Ladies Society of St. George will be held on Sunday, March 14th after Liturgy in the Church Hall.

The Teuta Ladies will also be sponsoring coffee hour, so members are asked to bake.

Rectory Committee Update

The following is an update from the Rectory Committee:

Trumbull Town Planner, Bill Levin, has been advised by Town Attorney's Mario Coppola and Robert Nicolla that a First Cut will be allowed for the proposed subdivision of the St. George's Church property into two lots. Our next step is to get approval to move our parking. This probably will not happen until the Planning and Zoning meeting in April.

The new parish council were installed at the end of liturgy on February 28th; Laura Chadwick – President; Nardi Tolkuchi- Vice President: Laura Denisevich –treasurer; Susan Lazos- recording secretary; Jeannie Brideau- Financial secretary; Pete Jordhamo- Trustee; Bob Lazar- Buildings and grounds. Many Years to all of them as they serve the parish this coming year. In addition, Bill Kovachi, Greg Buzi and Joe Chadwick will continue to work with the parish council during this transition period.

March Charity Tray

The March Charity Tray is to assist Fr. Gregory Becker who recently lost all of his possessions when a fire broke out in his home on February 26th. Father Gregory is servicing St. Elia Orthodox Church in Jamestown, NY. St. Elia is a sister parish in the Albanian Archdiocese of the OCA. On behalf of the archdiocese, we are raising money to assist him in his loss.

Support to local Food Banks

Hunger never takes a vacation!

The collection of non-perishable food stuffs is an on-going ministry in the parish. The proceeds are directed to area food banks (generally to the Trumbull Visiting Nurse Association and the Merton House of Bridgeport) for distribution to those who are in need.

St. George maintains collection boxes in the church for donating non-perishable food items all year. We appreciate everyone's continued support!

"We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

Lent originally was focused as an instruction time for those seeking to be received into the church. The above quote from Philip to his brother Nathaniel in today’s gospel summarizes point one of our experience as Christians of who is Jesus. But of course this presupposes that we are knowledgable of the Old Testament and after teaching a course in Old Testament to graduate students these past few years, I have concluded that most do not know the Old Testament. And then when the read it, they often do not know what to do with it afterwards, that is, how to understand and interpret it. It seems that the whole notion of actually studying our sacred texts is simply not popular or relevant to our busy lives.

Nathaniel is quite skeptical about his brother’s announcement the Jesus is “the one”. Philip can only invite him to check Jesus out for himself. Believe it or not, this is the point of our evangelical work. We may not know the answer to someone’s relgious question, but we can certainly point them in the right direction and invite them to check it out. Today the Gospel “re-invites” us to discover this Jesus proclaimed by Moses and the Prophets. The rest is up to us as we journey through another lenten season.

In today’s gospel we hear about real power, not the power of military might or the corporate power of money, but the power to forgive sins. Not everyone has this kind of authority. Our judges do not, rather they have the power to enforce justice, and forgiveness is hardly justice. In fact only the President of the United States has the real power to forgive sins against the nation. But Christ has been given the authority to forgive our sins, even though in today’s gospel this causes quite a stir. And if this is true, he becomes a reference point for us in our relationship with God. For clearly when the man shouts out the question today, “Who can forgive sins but God alone”, he is not wrong for ultimate judgment and mercy belongs to God. So forgiving is a divine act and as this filters down to us in our everyday lives, we likewise are commanded to exercise that power in relation to those who have wronged us. And in exercising true forgiveness to another person, we taste even if so slightly, a little bit of God himself. And if forgiveness is difficult and painful as it most certainly is at times, then even more so it is with Jesus himself. And of course all of this should lead us more into the meaning of Jesus’ death on the cross.

The Feast of the Cross demands from us a confession of faith. As human beings we are shaped by those things we believe and trust. We believe in a loving God who sacrifices his only-begotten son to save us from our violent and fearful ways with the command to “follow him”. We believe that this is the way to peace and that we each must become peacemakers by following Christ. We believe that we cannot retaliate evil for evil, or an eye for an eye. We believe that the mercy and forgiveness which Christ extends to us from the cross must also then likewise be extended to one and all freely without condition. We believe in patience for Christ is patient with his disciples who are fearful and reluctant to follow, often misunderstanding his plan. During the Lenten season may we rediscover and again confess, trust and believe in the Jesus who was crucified for us the way of the cross.
